Plastic/vinyl piece on inside rear door window

Post by Fjb »

What is its purpose? Can’t see out of it very well from the inside. Guess it somewhat provides privacy from vehicle travelling behind. Is that it? Thanks

Looks like one of the self stick wide angle prisms designed for seeing better out the back to me. Wouldn't work on mine as the window seal has failed and is fogged. lol I had one on my 24 Tioga years back and it worked pretty good.

Thanks SMan. Thought that was likely what it is for but it only seems to blur the view. Took it off and the window is nice and clear. Time to check out rear view cameras.

I installed a rear view camera prior to our recent trip to the southwest. One of the best upgrades ever!

FWIW, I have had those prisms on my back window for a few years, but have to replace them every few years in Texas. The first one grew some kind of mold or algae (sun + water trapped under the film) and the second just got vaguely cloudy (maybe the plastic itself was damaged?). I keep thinking about a camera, but the prisms are cheap and easy to install, so the camera keeps sinking near the bottom of the to-spend list.

A few comments about the rear view camera:

I really feel this is one of the best safety upgrades I have done. It made a big difference driving through traffic and making safer lane changes not to mention making it super easy to back into camp spots. I currently use velcro to attach the screen mount on the console but think I will eventually mount the unit over the rear view mirror. Using the camera as a rear view camera rather than a back up camera it is NOT wired to the reverse circuit.

The one thing I did find was an issue was the parasitic draw of the unit. (This would have been solved by connecting to a keyed circuit but I wanted the capability to use it while parked/camped as a surveillance camera.) The IR cameras will draw power even when the unit is turned off at the screen. To solve that for my application I simply unplug the cameras.
