water heater indicator lamp modification

Post by chin_k »

A kind gentleman has been share the following info on facebook group. I am going to cut and paste here so that some of us can find it easily. I hope Mantou won't won't mind.

Instructions for installing a water heater ON LED.

What you will need:
1. Square drive bit & driver or phillips screwdriver
for switch plate screws
2. Needle nose pliers to remove spade connectors
3. Drill and a ¼” bit for LED holder
4. Small utility knife to clean LED hole
5. Pre-wired LED (with resistor)

Remove switch/light plate and verify that there are no obstructions
on the back side in the center of the plate where the hole needs to be drilled .
Re-install the plate temporarily. Carefully, drill a ¼” hole in the center of the plate between the switch and light.
Remove the plate and clean the backside of the hole with the knife if necessary.
From the front side, insert the black LED holder all the way into the hole.
From the backside, insert the LED into the holder while using your fingernail
to keep the holder flush with the front of the switch plate.
Using the pliers, remove the WHITE wire from the light and insert the LED WHITE
wire into the hole of the spade lug on the light. Re-install the white wire onto
the light.
As above, do the same with the RED wire of the switch and the LED RED wire.
Turn on the water heater and verify correct operation of the LED.
If all is OK, re-install the switch plate and test again.
Enjoy.

This is a really easy and useful upgrade, since it is so easy to forget to turn off the water heater if you don't notice it is on. When I installed mine, I drilled a 1/8" hole and did not use an LED holder. I just inserted the led into the hole from the rear.
