Sounds like he learnt his lesson, and won't make the same mistake on the next customer.
I don't think a surge protector going to help you on that situation, however. It really depends on what type you have, and if it has over voltage protection and how much it can absorb. I usually watch the contractor like a hawk if they are touching my rig/house to avoid these mistakes.
