Good question and suggestion, it is in good condition, just dull and thirsty looking. Maybe if I treat it I won't have to paint it

I'm pretty sure it is supposed to be dull, flat black, so it doesn't reflect light into the driver's eyes.

So you don't want it shiny. Just clean
