Chinook RV

I just purchased the 2000 7.3 diesel chinook that was on ebay located in Las Vegas. The generator is propane fired. I haven't tried to start it yet as the propane tank is empty. Anybody have experience with these? Do they burn a lot of propane? Are they louder or quieter? Finally I am planning on replacing the stovetop and fridge. My thinking is to go all electric to save on the amount of propane burned overall. (save the propane for the generator) Anybody have any thoughts? Mark in San Diego

I would not convert the stove and refrigerator to electricity to save propane. They are amazingly efficient and hardly use any propane as is. You would probably use more propane to generate the electricity to cook and refrigerate.

I have experience with a propane 2800 Onan from a slide in camper. It was a little quieter, and the fumes were less offensive than a gasoline Onan, but both of those could be attributed to other factors. It was a true turd compared to a Honda, but nicer than the 4000 that came in my Chinook.

Electric fridge, yes (if you get a compressor type [there are threads in the forum]). Electric stove, no way unless you're always plugged in. If an appliance has the job of creating heat, electricity is a hog and LPG is the way to go.

I agree with Clay and Scott. I have the propane on for the fridge, and I have it on for several weeks, and it did not make any dent on the propane level. There is nothing beats propane when it come to generating heat. I don't think keeping the stove and fridge on propane will make you having to go to get fill up more often than you would.

I prefer a propane generator, since it does have have the gum up issue with gasoline. It is cleaner, but it does make less power (maybe 10%?) due to the energy density of propane vs gas.
