Spare tire
Spare tire
I’m currently on a camping trip, I was sitting in a beach chair on a spot lower than the back of my 2001 Destiny 2400 I happened to notice that the spare tire is loose and leaning to one side. Is there a way to tighten it and bring it back flush w the undercarriage? Help!!! I’m 400 miles from home and don’t want the thing falling off on the interstate!!!
Re: Spare tire
Well that's not a relaxing discovery. Just to clarify, you have a Chevy chassis, right? It sounds as though the spare may be underneath (more like a typical pickup truck) and not on the back bumper? Or is it on a vertical swing down mount like a Concourse/Premier (Ford chassis)?
If it's underneath, you could read the directions for lowering it as if you had a flat, then take a look at things, and then put it back up again and see if it goes up correctly. Often with that type you use a crank handle to lower it and raise it.
If on the back like mine, I'd still lower it down to investigate. Once you can see what's wrong maybe you'll see how to fix it, or we could make some suggestions.
Otherwise, maybe other Chevy/Destiny folks will have something more specific.

Re: Spare tire
Thanks Blue. I discovered the spare is raised/lowered by a switch located in the outside compartment next to the rear door. I tried raising it (via switch) and the tire goes up but is still a little crooked. I’m going to have to crawl up under there to keep the tire straight while I recruit someone to press the switch!!! I’ll let you know how it goes.
Re: Spare tire
Aha! Very interesting. I figured it might not be the same as the Ford/21' version.
It sounds like a more typical undercarriage mount, but with an electric lowerer/raiser instead of a manual crank. Maybe for a luxurious touch; or maybe because with the fiberglass body the crank wasn't long enough, or would have had to bisect tankage or something.
I just helped a friend with a spare on a trailer that went in an underbody mount. In his case there were a couple of different ways you could put the tire in with different results (mount "cage" was not totally symmetrical).
