Chinook RV

This last trip it rained the whole time and all we have for a tv antenna is one of those that sticks to the inside window. Unfortunantly in our area we only pick up 3 channels thru the airways. None if it is cloudy or raining which is when we spend time in the Chinook!! We have 3 Direct tv units at our home and can unplug one and take with us if need be. I tried to read about what else I needed and what it would cost but got totally confused!! Can someone simplify this for me? What is the cheapest way to go and what do I need? Campsites with cable we are fine but most places we go have no cable. Also we probably only camp 4 or 5 times a year we would use it. Thanks

I think for DTV, you need to aim the dish for it to work.

If you opt for an over the air antenna (OTA) a few things to keep in mind.

There is no such thing as an "HD" antenna. (It's marketing speak) Television broadcasts are transmitted on VHF 2-13 and UHF 14-51 as they have always been.

Be sure the antenna you pick is designed to receive both VHF and UHF signals.

Ranges on OTA antennas are typically 1/2 of the stated distance. (Again marketing) They usually count distance both ways.

Those flat antennas typically don't work well in an RV as distance severely limits their effectiveness.

In an RV an exterior antenna that can be rotated is best so you can aim it towards TV towers.

All that said the Winegard batwing on my Chinook works as good now as it did prior to HD so never let a salesman tell you that it needs to be changed to get HD.
