trimark door lock loose and door difficult to shut

Post by chin_k »

There are three torx bolts that clap the door lock onto the back door, but even when I tighten the as much as I can, the whole assembly shift up and down when I use the lever. Is there some other mechanism that prevent this shifting from happening? The outside half has no weather seal or anything that give it more friction.

And how hard do you slam to get the door to close properly? The latch jaw does not grab onto the striker bolt unless I close it very hard. There are weather seal near the hings that make it difficult for the door to close easily without squeezing them to paper-thin before the latch mechanism triggers and grab onto the bolt. Do I remove the weather seal on the hinge area, or that will lead to leaking?

My door handle does not move, so I am not sure what your problem is there. However, you can adjust the "tightness" of you door closing easily. The stud that the door latch connects to on the frame has a hex end that you can loosen with a wrench. Then you can rotate and/or slide the stud in or out and re-tighten. You should be able to adjust the stud so that a normal swing of the door will latch easily but firmly.

Thank you, Clay. I will do the adjustment on the strike bolt right now. For the lock itself, I am going to put some double-sided type on it and see if it will help.

I adjusted the bolt, and it is working better now. However, I noticed that the door is not flat against the frame. There is no gap on the hinge and the top edge, but the side with the latch (left side when facing the back) have a gap of 1/4 inch, and the gaskets (the one on the frame and the one on the door) do not even touch anything, so it is not rain tight if it is very windy. So the door is like a potato chip... or the door frame is.

I added some double-sided tapes to the two door halves, and it does not move around in the rectangular hole anymore.
