v10 install and 4x4 conversion
Hi I am attempting to show pictures of a 1998 Chinook premier that I am installing a factory rebuilt v10 and a 4x4 conversion. The prior owner took the Chinook for an oil change and the company forgot to fill it with oil. The result a hole in the engine block. I purchased a factory rebuilt engine from Ford. 3 year unlimited mileage warranty. I decided while I was at it to convert it to 4 wheel drive using a 2002 Ford E350 Quigley van as a donor vehicle. The Quigley van utilized a kingpin dana 60 with serviceable bearings. I had to find dually front hubs and have them machined for the abs tone rings. I replaced both outer axles with 35 spline chromoly axles as well as one of the inner axles; The housing received new 4.11 gears and new posi (limit slip) along with all new seals, bearings, and rebuilt kingpins; All soft fuel lines and vacuum lines were replaced as they were deteriorated. new rotors and calipers; The crossmember was trimmed as per Quigley specs and a master welder installed the reinforcement brackets; Removing the old engine and reinstalling the new one were fairly easy but time consuming; I am a ford mechanic of 40 years and have a restoration shop in the San Diego area with every tool imagineable; All fasteners were replaced with 10.9 (grade 8) fasteners and torqued to Ford factory specifications. The Chinook itself was from Nevada with 77,000 original miles; It is extremely clean and rustfree; The last photo shows the new engine installed and bolting on all the accessories.
I will continue to add pictures as the project moves along. Mark in San DiegoRe: v10 install and 4x4 conversion
Neato! Your shop/skills are obviously well matched for this. Thanks for bringing us along.
(What a bummer for the previous owner (although I would hope they were well compensated). When I drain my oil I put my keys far, far away until the new oil is back in. That has to be a sinking moment.... turning the key and then realizing...)
But now you are bringing it back to better than new. Yeah!

Nice work! I'm glad you bought that ebay chinook out of Vegas! Looked clean.
Is there anyway you can put all the pics into one post? Makes it easier to scroll through and see all the progress. Just "reply" to your post and add the photos there, then repeat as needed.

Former owner of a 2000 Chinook Premier, V-10, with no Interior...

That's a good suggestion, eporter. I find it can be easy to lose track of "where you are" when writing a post (because then the overall context doesn't show up). Suddenly you find you've started twenty threads.
But as you say, if you just "reply" to your own post, then they'll all line up in one thread.
Mark: But no worries, it's great that you are doing this huge project PLUS taking the time to share it with us. That's no mean feat, I know. Maybe Manitou can collect it all into this thread for future reference.
Your shop and business in San Diego sound so cool! That's my alternative dream life
