Are replacement side glasses available?

Post by Flame »

We just had to replace a windshield in our car and my son says he needs a windshield for his car. Just got me to thinking about the 1998 concourse big slanted mirrored side glasses. Are they available should anything ever happen to mine? Can you still get them in mirrored look? Has anyone ever had to replace one and how expensive was it? I'm thinking you would have to take it to a specialty glass co. and have one custom fit??

I'm just going by distant memory here, but I think one person mentioned that they were able to find a new-old-stock one. I think someone else was not able to.

One thing to keep in mind is that Chinook used different brands and types of windows not only from year to year, but sometimes within a year even. I found this out when I was trying to find the ultra-rare "screen clips" that were on my particular large side windows. Supposedly, my year had windows made by the SE-GI company. SE-GI was super helpful in working with me to figure out what I had.... which turned out to be Hehr windows. The bottom clips are rare but you can get them; the upper ones are unobtanium. Luckily I was able to make sturdy smoothie straws work in place of my missing clips (I know, sounds crazy but works).

The above just to say that even if one person says they could or could not get a window - that may not apply to your particular exact windows.

I would likely try to get a replacement if one of mine broke. But I also might just get two new windows from someone like Motion Windows. Likely dual pane, with better screen tracks and maybe a different opening scheme (like.. MORE opening).

If I had a Class A with twenty windows I'd probably feel differently. At least we only have two! (Plus the door.)

Due to an unfortunate run-in with a stone-throwing weed whacker, we had to replace a shattered coach window on the passenger side of our 2001 Concourse. During my search, I contacted quite a number of RV window repair/replacement businesses. Several said they could make the dual-paned elliptical window; however, they best they could offer was dark tinted glass. I also spoke with someone from Si-Gi Glass and he actually remembered the exact window. Said they could readily make a replacement but WITHOUT the mirrored glass. That glass was originally made by Si-Gi, but no longer.

Fortunately, I was finally able to obtain a new-old stock replacement from Aubrey's in Yakima. At the time (almost 3 yeas ago), they had one or two other windows but they only had the one that fit my year/model.

All I can say is - keep your fingers crossed that you never need to replace it!

Interesting the variations. I think you are the person I remembered who got the NOS window. That was a piece of luck.

However, I believe Hehr must have been able to get the mirrored glass as well (I think they called it solar bronze or something like that?). My windows were made by Hehr, and they are the typical mirrored, slightly bronze (when looking out from inside) Concourse windows.

We wouldn't expect anything less from the man who invented the "Door-Stick"!

Ha! I'm still using that stick - it works perfectly

If I had a 3D printer (or a friend with one), I bet it would be easy to make those clips. They are so thin, and such a convoluted shape, that I couldn't figure out any other way to make them short of owning a giant plastics company. I never in a million years expected the straws to work, but... they do. Good thing as I couldn't scare those clips up *anywhere* and I feel like I'm pretty good at finding parts.

I have the Dual Pane Glass on all of my windows and they are Solar Bronze Mirror 5/32" thick. There is only ONE company that has this Solar Bronze Mirror glass and here is there info...

Peninsula Glass Co.
6005 NE 121st Ave
Vancouver WA 98682
Phone 360 892-2029
Email order@onedayglass.com

I have a 2004 Priemer and had the glass replaced due to the previous owners glass replacement that was incorrect. The cost of the fixed panel shipped to my glass shop to be install in California was $222.95 This piece was tempered and packed amazing well and FedEX 2 day shipping. My total cost reinstalled new glass into the frame and labor was $360.00 Every other glass shop I found including the Glass Shop that installed this glass only can get 1/4" Solar Bronze Mirror. I hope this helps

That's great info. Peninsula Glass is also Motion Windows, I believe, who make many RV and boat windows.

Thanks for reviving this thread as I couldn't remember this info. I was thinking, if I had a 1989-1990 second generation flat roof Chinook, and I wanted the windows double thermalpane, I would go to Peninsula Glass. New frames, new glass, new screens!
